Ahu Tongariki

Ahu Tongariki holds the largest stone platform on Easter Island and 15 Moai statues. Here you could walk or bike around and see the statues or the old town. Easter Island’s Moai were meticulously restored in the early 1990s after the island’s civil war and a tsunami that moved and damaged the statues. The area of Ahu Tongariki is situated between two extinct volcanoes, Rano Raraku and Poike on the south coast of Rapa Nui. Rapa Nui was once the capital center of the Hotu Iti tribe. At the top of the mountain stand fifteen distinct Moai stand on the ahu (a stone platform), with their backs facing the Pacific Ocean and a 16th Moai is being showcased at museums across the world. The Moai are facing remnants of an ancient village or town. Lots of legends and myths are centered around the Moai and the town that they are facing. Ahu Tongariki is a must see sight with lots of history and a beautiful landscape.
