Art and Music in Chile

The capital of Chile, Santiago is colorful and full of art. Most Chilean art represents creativity and traditional culture and Chile’s art is very authentic. Street art is the most popular artform in Chile and Chile has a rich art history with many talented painters who have left a mark on the art world. 

Some famous Chilean artists known around the world are Pedro Lira, Marcial Plasa-Ferrand, and F. Deiezmann. Each of these artests have contributed to Chile's vibrant and artistic landscape. Pedro Lira is considered one of the most influential figures in Chile art history and he plays a big role in the development of art in Chile and his art often depicts scenes from everyday life and from history in Chile. He is known locally and internationally for his hyper realistic paintings. Marcial Plaza-Ferrand was a Chilean painter known for his impressionistic style and he studied in Europe, where he was influenced by art from different French artists and his art shows mostly nature scenes and he is also known for his ability to capture the details of landscapes and seascapes. He uses vibrant colors and loose brush strokes and he is one of Chile’s leading impressionist painters. Francisco Deiezmann was a Chilean painter known for his paintings which had a blend of symbolism and surrealism and he often painted dreamlike, fantastical elements, subconscious mind and the human condition. He is considered one of the pioneers of surrealism in Chile. 

These three artists represent a diverse range of styles and themes in Chilean art history and they have had a long lasting impression on global art. These artists have a lot of talent and creativity and through their talent they have established a place in the list of Chile’s best artists. An amazing Art museum is the Chilean National Museum. It is a museum of fine Arts and is one of the main centers that houses Chilean art. It is one of the oldest and best art museums in South America. Another amazing museum in Chile is the Santiago Museum of Contemporary Art. This is also an important museum that was created in 1947 and has several pieces by Colombian artists. It is known for its art collections by some of the country’s best-known artists like Robero Matta and Matile Pérez.

 

In Chile there are two types of traditional music: Pre-Columbian Chilean music and Folkloric music. Pre-Columbian Chilean music comes from the Mapuche people. Their music is mainly religious and is performed with traditional instruments such as trutruca and torompe. The folkloric music of Chile is mainly based around a dance that was originally the national dance of chile in 1979 and may vary depending on where you are in the country. 

Some popular and innovative Chilean musicians today include Claudia Acuña, Javiera Mena, and Beto Cuevas. Claudia Acuña is one of the first famous Chilean artists to introduce her country’s folk music into the world. She sings Jazz, ballads, and bossanova and she often offers free open-space concerts in low income neighborhoods. Javiera is one of the most famous Chilean artists. She is a song-writer, singer, composer, and producer and she was nominated for multiple awards with her number one hit, Orta Era. Beto Cuevas is a singer, composer, producer, actor, and designer. People first got to know him as the lead singer of a popular Chilean music band called La Ley and later on he began a solo career and won the Grammy Best Pop Rock Album Category Award. All of these musicians and artists represent Chile’s historical past and how innovative Chile is today.
